After scoring 55 goals during that season to help Bayern Munich clinch a European and a domestic trophies, it was only fair to acknowledge his effort.

Lewandowski topped a three-player shortlist that included Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He was voted by a global jury of national team captains and coaches, plus selected journalists and fans.

Meanwhile, this year’s event was hosted in a virtual ceremony in Zurich, but FIFA president Gianni Infantino went to Munich to present the award to the winner.
