Ogo Okpue, a Nigerian filmmaker based in the United Kingdom, received the Best Director award at the 2023 American Black Film Festival for his movie, ‘A Song From The Dark.’ The ceremony took place in Miami, USA, where Okpue tied with Bryan Keith Montgomery Jr., a rising African American film director, for the award.
The American Black Film Festival, which is currently in its 27th annual edition, is the largest black film festival worldwide and aims to showcase audio-visual works of black origin.
‘A Song From the Dark’ also won the Best Actor category at the American Black Film Festival. It received six nominations at the 2022 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Nigeria, and Okpue was awarded Best Director for First Feature Film at the previous AMAA event.
The film features Nollywood stars Nse Ikpe Etim and Wale Ojo, as well as Ghanaian-born Vanessa Vanderpuye, Octavia Gilmore, Dean Kilby, and others. It is a fantasy-horror movie that highlights heroes and heroines from African traditional mysticism.
During his acceptance speech, Okpue expressed his gratitude to God, his family, and friends. He dedicated the award to them, emphasizing the importance of believing in something before pursuing it. Overwhelmed by the honor, he thanked God, his wife, and the casting crew for their support.
