Onyeka Onwenu, the iconic Nigerian singer, tragically passed away on the night of Tuesday, July 30, at the age of 72. The music legend reportedly died at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after performing at an event earlier that evening.
A source close to the family revealed that Onwenu was attending the birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli, the founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. After her performance at the party, she returned to her seat and suddenly collapsed. She was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Born on May 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu enjoyed a remarkable career that spanned over four decades. She was celebrated not only as a singer and songwriter but also as an actress, journalist, and politician. Her debut album with Polygram, “In The Morning Light”, was released in 1984.
Among her many hits, some of her most beloved songs include “One Love,” “Bia Nulu,” and “Ekwe.”
