To address the issue of unemployment in Nigeria, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed, has encouraged Corps Members to acquire vocational skills through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program provided by the NYSC.
According to a statement issued by Eddy Megwa, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Ahmed emphasized the importance of skill acquisition as the sole solution to unemployment. He conveyed this message during his speeches to Corps Members at the Katsina State Orientation Camp and the NYSC Borno State Orientation Camp.
Furthermore, the NYSC DG emphasized the value of in-camp training for all Corps Members, which aims to expose them to entrepreneurial opportunities during their three-week Orientation period.
Ahmed stated, “Learn from SAED, take advantage of it, and develop your potential through it to achieve financial independence and become employers. The post-camp training period will enable them to further refine their skills for self-employment,” explained Ahmed.
In addition, the Director General issued a cautionary statement regarding the NYSC dress code, warning Corps Members that any violation would be considered an offense. He stated, “The era of inappropriate dressing is over. You must always dress appropriately, as any improper dressing will result in penalties. If you are not dressed appropriately, you will not be allowed to enter our offices.”
Ahmed also encouraged Corps Members to actively engage in camp activities and utilize the four main programs of the Scheme (Orientation Course, Primary Assignment, Community Development Service, and Winding-Up/Passing-Out) to establish relationships and make a positive impact on their host communities.
Providing an update on the situation, the NYSC Katsina State Coordinator, Mrs. Aisha Muhammad, informed the Director General that all 1,129 registered Corps Members, consisting of 551 males and 578 females, have adjusted smoothly to their new environment and are in good spirits.
