Jamb Sets Minimum Admission Scores

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has implemented a National Minimum Tolerable score for admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. According to the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, this score is set at 140, 120, and 100 respectively.

The announcement was made during the 2023 Policy Meeting of Tertiary Institutions in Abuja on Saturday. It is mandatory for all institutions to adhere to this requirement and they must not set their admission points below the approved standards.

Additionally, Prof. Oloyede emphasized that each tertiary institution must establish its own minimum standard for screening and grading in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE), which should not be lower than 50 marks.

“All institutions are obligated to adhere to this minimum score. It is imperative that no institution falls below this benchmark. Even for the 15 private universities that have previously set minimum points between 120 and 130, it is crucial to note that the minimum score of 140 must be strictly adhered to and not violated. The system will not recognize scores below 140, so it is important to ensure compliance,” he explained.

Furthermore, Prof. Oloyede stated that institutions are prohibited from charging candidates more than N2,000 as screening fees.
