Negotiating salary over the phone can be tricky and demands judicious thinking to pull through without having regrets later.

To tactically negotiate a salary over the phone, see these steps:

1. Avoid deciding on the spot

One thing that negotiating salary over the phone can cause you to do, is to decide on the spot. By all means, avoid the temptation of concluding a salary over the phone because you may end up making wrong decisions or reaching agreements that will not be favourable to you.

 

2. Reduce emotional reactions

When negotiating salary over the phone, try to hide your excitement or disappointment. If the deal comes bigger than you expected, be grateful, but do not be overly excited on phone. Being too excited on phone serve as a sign of desperation.

 

3. Get the full job description before closing a deal

The disappointing thing about salary negotiation on phone is that you may be fast to conclude without getting to know what the job description entails.

 

4. Make a research  before starting a negotiation

When you have had an idea of what the job you are about to take up is. Make a research on the possible salary range. You can ask friends or other people who are already in the job to avoid making mistakes if undercharging or overcharging.

 

5. Avoid phrases like “I need…” 

Using words like “I need…” May make you sound desperate or really in need of the job. Rath, use phrases like ” I will be comfortable…” Position yourself in a way that you are being if help the organisation.

 

6. Keep it professional

Because you are negotiating over a phone does not make it less professional. Keep your words professional and attitude over the phone professional. Avoid slang or sentence fragments. Pulling up unprofessional attitudes can even cut off your chances of getting a job before you get to the negotiation level.
