In Swahili culture, dance plays a significant role in social and cultural activities, and it is generally community-oriented. However, there are some traditional dances and performances that involve women dancing to entertain their male guests.
A typical example is the Mapouka dance – a modernized version of a traditional dance from the Dabou area of southeast Côte d’Ivoire. The dance is mostly performed by women, shaking their rear end side to side, facing away from their audience, often while bent over.
