Ogun Senatorial Candidate says ₦2M too small for Senators Holidays Allowance
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District, David Aderinokun, expressed his view that the N2 million holiday allowance for Nigerian senators was insufficient.

He conveyed this perspective on his verified social media account, suggesting that the sum was inadequate for a senator, particularly for those with families. Aderinokun acknowledged that the allowance may not be a significant amount, but emphasized that the decision to make it public was insensitive to the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.

During a special plenary session to screen and confirm President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, Senate President Godwill Akpabio announced that the Clerk to the National Assembly had deposited a token amount into senators’ individual bank accounts for their annual holiday.

However, his public announcement was met with disapproval from the senators who found it inappropriate. In response to the senators’ reactions, Akpabio rephrased his statement, saying that he had sent prayers to their mailboxes to ensure their safe travels during the holidays.

In summary, David Aderinokun, the PDP candidate, criticized the N2 million holiday allowance for Nigerian senators, believing it to be insufficient, especially considering the responsibilities of a senator. He also criticized the decision to publicize the allowance, deeming it insensitive to the struggles faced by the general population.

Meanwhile, Senate President Akpabio’s initial public announcement of the holiday allowance faced opposition from fellow senators, leading him to offer prayers for their safe travels instead.
