NLC set to embark nationwide strike on Wednesday
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to go on a nationwide strike starting Wednesday, June 8, 2023, if the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) does not reverse the new pump price for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.
The NLC made the decision at the end of an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Friday, June 3, 2023.
The strike is being called in protest of the NNPCL’s decision to increase the price of petrol from N162 per litre to N212 per litre. The NLC argues that the hike is unfair and will further impoverish Nigerians.
The NLC has also expressed concern about the NNPCL’s lack of transparency and accountability. The company is a private limited liability company, which means that it is not subject to the same level of public scrutiny as a government-owned company.
The NLC has given the NNPCL until Wednesday to reverse the price hike. If the company does not comply, the NLC will proceed with the strike.
The strike is likely to have a significant impact on the Nigerian economy. It could lead to disruptions in transportation, food distribution, and other essential services. It could also lead to job losses and a decline in economic growth.
